Meet Matthew – Level 1 Engineer at 5C Services

Just over a year ago, Matthew joined 5C Services as a Trainee Engineer.

Today, he’s a confident Level 1 Technical Engineer, supporting clients, managing projects, and solving complex IT challenges.

His journey is a great example of how hands-on learning, mentorship, and a supportive team culture can shape a successful career in technology.

We caught up with Matthew to hear more about how he got started, what he’s learned so far, and what it’s really like to grow your IT career at 5C.

Building Confidence Through Real-World Experience

“When I started at 5C, I had a solid foundation of IT knowledge from college,” Matthew explains. “But this was my first real chance to put that knowledge into practice.”

Since joining in June 2024, Matthew has progressed from learning the basics of customer support to handling complex technical tickets and projects. “Over time, I’ve gained the confidence to take on more challenging work and contribute to bigger projects. The hands-on experience here has been invaluable.”

Turning Passion into a Profession

Matthew’s interest in IT started long before he joined 5C. “I’ve always loved problem-solving and figuring out how things work,” he says. “Building my own gaming PC made me realise that I wanted to pursue IT seriously.”

After studying Computing at Herefordshire & Ludlow College and earning Level 2 and 3 qualifications, he completed his CompTIA A+ certification, which gave him the technical foundation to start his career.

Supported Learning and Career Development

At 5C, learning never stops - and Matthew’s story is proof. He’s now working towards his CompTIA Network+ certification, with full support from the company.

“5C provided all the training materials I needed,” he explains. “They genuinely invest in helping us grow our skills. Having access to resources and guidance from experienced engineers has made a huge difference.”

This commitment to professional development is part of 5C’s wider approach to nurturing talent from within - ensuring every trainee has the tools and mentorship they need to succeed.

Collaboration, Challenge, and a Supportive Team

Matthew’s favourite part of the job is project work. “I love working towards a clear goal with the team,” he says. “It’s rewarding to see how each smaller task contributes to a successful outcome. Plus, every project teaches me something new about IT systems.”

He admits that site visits were initially outside his comfort zone. “It was something I used to worry about, but I knew it was important for my development. With support from the team, I’ve been able to take on those challenges - and now I really enjoy them.”

That sense of teamwork is what stands out most about the 5C culture. “It’s the best work environment I’ve been in,” Matthew adds. “Everyone’s willing to help each other, and there’s always support available if you need it.”

Looking Ahead

Matthew is continuing to build his technical skills and aims to progress to higher-level engineering roles in the future.

“If I could switch roles with anyone for a day, it would be one of the senior engineers,” he says. “It would be amazing to see how they handle the larger, more complex setups - it’s a great learning opportunity.”

A Place to Learn, Grow, and Belong

Matthew’s journey shows what’s possible when enthusiasm meets opportunity.

At 5C, trainees aren’t just learning IT - they’re building lasting careers with the support of a close-knit, professional team.

At 5C, we don’t just hire engineers, we develop them.

If you’re curious about a career in IT and want to explore a hands-on route into the industry, our trainee opportunities could be the perfect place to start.
